Overriding security settings

If the problem is due to the configuration of the browser (case #3), you can override this security setting in most browsers as described in the following sections.

Chrome

Before opening Chrome in an application, close all current Chrome browser windows. Start Chrome from the command line without a URL using an argument that will override the restrictive security setting. Opening additional Chrome browser windows will inherit this security setting allowing the web pages to be displayed.

The command line argument is --allow-file-access-from-files. You can use it in the following way in Linux, Mac OS and Microsoft Windows:

  • Linux shell:
    google-chrome --allow-file-access-from-files
  • Mac OS X Terminal application:
open -a "Google Chrome" --args --allow-file-access-from-files
  • Microsoft Windows “Command Prompt”:
    start chrome.exe --allow-file-access-from-files

Firefox

Enter about:config as the URL. Firefox will display an alphabetized list of preferences for browsers settings. Find security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy and set it to false.

Safari

Internet Explorer

Loading the local pages will display a warning message and a check box labeled “Allow blocked content.” Confirm by clicking on the check box.

Edge

The Microsoft Edge browser does not allow local files to be loaded. However, if Edge is your default browser, you can use Internet Explorer instead through the “More (...)” menu item. Select “Open with Internet Explorer.” When the page loads, click the check box “Allow blocked content.”
